The best time to start looking at models and items is now before they go on sale. Take a look around the website and the showrooms. Test things out and look at colors and styles.

If you don’t know what you’re looking for exactly, getting a feel for what is available is the key to finding what you like and don’t.

Step 2: To Assemble Or Not To Assemble

Here is another big factor in determining your furniture choice – whether or not you want to assemble your furniture deals or not.

Most likely if you purchase something online, some portion of it will need to be assembled. If you’re not handy with instructions and a screwdriver or don’t have the time, you will probably need to purchase something from a brick and mortar store that is fully put together.

While purchasing something that needs to be assembled may be cheaper than something fully put together, it will be up to you whether it is worth the time and price.

If you choose to pay for assembly let’s say something from Ikea, you’ll need to compare that price to a brick and mortar store for a fully assembled piece to determine whether or not it’s still a good deal.

Another tip on when is the best time to buy furniture is when you are comfortable with the deal. If the process of putting the furniture together scares you, it’s probably not worth it.

Step 3: Finding The Right Time To Buy

Before I tell you when to buy, I need to mention an important part of the buying process: affording the furniture. If you are in the market for some furniture, today is when you need to start saving. Period.

If you know you are going to have to put the majority on a credit card (or store credit), you should try to lower that amount as much as possible. Start saving now, so you can save on interest payments.

The less you put on credit the better.

Now that that’s outta the way, let’s look at when is the best time to buy furniture.

Some of the best times to start looking for deals on furniture is late winter or in late summer.

New furniture lines hit the stores in the spring and fall so stores will be trying to get rid of the old styles right before then.

January and February will be the time to look in the winter. The winter sales happening during the President’s Day weekend will be a great time to snag a deal.

Look for deals in August and September, especially during the Labor Day weekend sales to find good deals. And if you’re looking for office or kids furniture, keep your eyes out during the back to school sales. That’s when there are deals on furniture for kids going back to college. Plus, you’ll see deals on office furniture, especially office chairs.

Step 4: Know Where To Shop

Once you know what you want to purchase, and if you’re willing to assemble it yourself of not, now you’re ready to do the shopping.

Here’s my top places for where to find cheap furniture: (and don’t forget to check the “clearance” or “sale” area too)

  1. Amazon (Surprising, right?! They have several sofas for under $300, and this beautiful faux leather sectional that’s under $450)
  2. Wayfair
  3. Great Deal Furniture
  4. IKEA
  5. Birch Lane
  6. Hayneedle
  7. Lexmod
  8. Kohl’s (don’t forget to use the specific shopping strategy explained here)
  9. Overstock
  10. BigLots

And during those best times of the year to shop, you’ll find furniture at the warehouse stores as well (Costco, Sam’s Club and BJ’s warehouse) as well as Target and Walmart.

Now, if you REALLY wanna save some money on furniture, then buying used will save you a ton of money. The Facebook Marketplace (search your local area for moving sales or estate sales) and Craigslist can be a lifesaver.

My daughter just bought a brand new leather sectional for $300 (we estimate that it was worth over $2,000 new) and the owners delivered it for free. She watched the marketplace for about 3 weeks to see if someone was moving or wanted to get rid of their sofa so she could scoop it up for a steal. And she found one. You can too!

Plus, my sister has successfully purchased two beautiful brand name bedroom sets off Craigslist for a fraction of the original retail price. The reason the owner was getting rid of their sets both times was that they either wanted something new or they were tired of the color. They weren’t very “used” at all!

While cash is king with both of these deals, you could be saving up to 50-75% off the retail price for the items you need and saving you a ton of money in the long run. The best deals on furniture are just waiting to be found by you!

Step 5: Sign Up For Email Alerts

After you have toured the showrooms and checked out the websites, get signed up for their email alerts.

These alerts can help you decide when it’s time to buy.

You wouldn’t want to miss the sale on the item you’ve been looking for.

When is the best time to buy furniture? You’ll know if you’ve done your homework.

Step 6: Shop Around & Compare Prices

What if you found the one you love? Do you purchase it right then? NO! Make a note of the model number and name and do a quick online search to see if another store or website has something cheaper.

Then you can be armed with negotiating information – because you should NEVER pay the sticker price! If you can find something comparable for less somewhere else, ask for that price! If they can’t give you that price, then you know you can purchase it elsewhere for less.

And you’ll have saved yourself some money all just by comparison shopping.

Step 7: Think Outside The Furniture Store

If you are looking into purchasing furniture, and just think the prices are out of this world, it’s time to get away from the brand name furniture stores.

Unfinished furniture is a great (and super inexpensive) option. That’s right. If you are a little crafty, there are shops where they sell real wood furniture that is unfurnished. All you have to do is paint or stain it yourself.

I did a little digging around and I found a “farmhouse” style dining table that was around $300 cheaper than a similar table at a brand name store. Just think at the savings you could find if you just dig a little deeper and be a little crafty too!

So when is the best time to buy furniture? You never know until you find the best deal for you.

Plus, when you learn how to find furniture deals, you’ll never want to pay full price ever again.
