Most college students will graduate with more than $20,000 in student loan debt by the end of their four years.

When I was in high school, and even in college, it never even crossed my mind to start applying for scholarships.

This is the same mindset that many incoming first-year students have, and if they knew about these secrets for applying to scholarships, they might have been able to start their adult life debt free.

Whether you are going back to school as an adult, or graduating high school and preparing for college, here are a few secrets you need to know about scholarships.

You Don’t Have To Be An Athlete To Get A Scholarship

The most common and well-known scholarships are obviously athletic related, but there are so many other scholarships out there that can help you pay your way through school.

If athletics aren’t your thing, consider looking into academic scholarships or other lesser known scholarships that relate to your field of study.

You Don’t Have To Be The Top In Your Class To Get A Scholarship

You don’t have to be the top student in your class to get related academic scholarships!

The average student can also win some money, but you have to know where to look!

There are scholarships available for everything from writing essays about things you’re passionate about, being tall, or even a vegetarian.

Take the time to look and research these lesser-known scholarships to see if there is anything you might be able to apply for.

Apply Early

Even if your future graduate isn’t a senior in high school, it can pay to start applying for scholarships early.  The earlier you can apply for these scholarships, the better your chance of winning will be.

If you don’t get it this year, try applying again next year for the same scholarship.

There are even scholarships for elementary and middle school students to take advantage of those opportunities!

The younger the requirement is, the less competition there will be for them.

Continue To Apply All Throughout Your College Career

Continue to apply for scholarships even after graduation.

There are hundreds of scholarships available for those already in college and all the way up to graduation.

Even if you already know where you’ll be attending college, this just opens up new doors!

Look at your university for a chance to earn scholarships! There are even some for only upperclassmen available.

Scholarships Can Be Used Toward More Than Just Tuition

Most of us are probably just looking to cover the hefty cost of tuition.

However, if your financial aid is covering your tuition, or you are looking to get more money for college, consider continuing to apply for scholarships.

These scholarships can be used to cover textbooks, room and board, and many other academic-related expenses associated with going to college.

Some scholarships can only be used toward your tuition, but many others can be used beyond that.

Search Locally

Organizations and even small businesses in your area may have scholarships available for teens in your area!

Do a quick search in both your city and state to see if there are any scholarships you can apply to!

The competition for these will be high, but if you win, they can be a big pay off.

Scholarships Are Available All Year Round

For some reason, there is a myth that there is a specific season to be applying for scholarships.

However, applying later in the year could work to your advantage.

Scholarships are available all throughout the year with many having deadlines each month.

Consider applying after school starts or right near the end of the school year.

Many students will be focused on their studies and school that they won’t be thinking of using their free time to apply.

Don’t Let Age Limit You!

If you are thinking of returning to school, don’t let your age keep you from applying for scholarships!

There are a ton of great scholarships available only to older students, and even remote students as well.

Do your research before you head back to college to see if there is anything you can do to lower the cost of going.

You may be surprised to find scholarships available just for your situation!

Scholarships can be a great way to afford college even if you don’t have much money. If you equip yourself with these secrets, you’ll have a better chance of getting more scholarships for college!
