You see, I kept forgetting to clean it. I know, it’s gross and I realize the reason it got so gross because I kept forgetting about it.
You know that “out of sight, out of mind” thing happens daily… until I step inside it. And then I’m reminded all over again that I need to clean the shower.
But there’s simply no time. I scurry to finish my shower, get the kids fed and start schoolwork for them and blogging for me and I forget about it all over again.
That’s when I wished I had something that was actually inside the shower to clean it while I was thinking about it.

So wouldn’t you like to make this DIY shower scrubber for just pennies? Of course, you would!
Gather your supplies and let’s get cleaning!
Ingredients & Supplies:
For this best shower cleaner recipe, you will need:
- 1/4 Cup Vinegar
- 1/4 Cup Dawn Dish Soap
- Dish Scrubber Wand (found at the Dollar Store)
- 5 Drops Lemon Essential Oil (price varies) (I use the Young Living brand because of their purity promise)
- 5 Drops Thieves Essential Oil (price varies) (I use the Young Living brand because of their purity promise)
You can find these dish scrubber wands at any store, but they are only $1 at your local dollar store. Plus the dollar store usually carries a 2 pack of refill heads for just a $1 also, which is great because you will need to replace them from time to time so you can continue using this DIY shower cleaner with essential oils .
Although this homemade DIY shower scrubber recipe contains citrus essentials oils, I don’t worry about it eating through the plastic of the dish scrubber wand. I don’t think 5 drops mixed with the other ingredients is potent enough to eat through the plastic of this wand. I’ve never had it happen to me, however, since they are only a $1, they can be easily replaced if needed.
Directions To Fill The DIY Shower Scrubber:
To make this best shower cleaner, fill the dish wand halfway with about 1/4 cup of Dawn dishwashing liquid. You must add the Dawn first or the vinegar will run out of the wand.
Then, add about 1/4 cup of vinegar.
Add 5 drops of the essential oils last.
Shake wand to distribute soap, vinegar, and the oils.
Now it’s time to get cleaning!
Clean Your Shower:
First, wet the sponge side of the wand and wet your shower down as well. Scrub down the entire shower including any glass you have with your scrubbing wand that has the best shower cleaner mixed inside.
Rinse everything well.

Once clean, use the DIY shower scrubber every couple of days to keep the shower clean. Refill the shower wand as needed.
Be sure to store the shower wand upright so your DIY shower cleaner with essential oils will not leak out causing a slippery mess. I found a suction cup soap holder at the dollar store that works really well to hold it in the shower. At only $1 as well, you can’t beat it!
This DIY shower scrubber with essential oils also works great to scrub down the sink too.
How Much Does It Cost?
- 1/4 Cup Vinegar = 4¢
- 1/4 Cup Dawn Dish Soap = 24¢
- Dish Scrubber Wand = $1 (one time cost)
- 5 Drops Lemon Essential Oil (price varies)
- 5 Drops On Guard, Thieves or a Germ Fighting Protectant Essential Oil (price varies)
Total Cost = 28¢ per 1/2 cup liquid
Note: This does not cover the cost of the essentials oils or scrubbing wand.
As you can see, this DIY shower scrubber is a win-win for you and your budget! Compared to other store-bought cleaners that don’t work nearly as effective and cost way more per use, this is the cleaner around!
Not only do I now remember to clean my shower every couple of days, but it actually stays clean now because I can quickly clean it while I’m in the shower.
Plus, this best shower cleaner is so cheap to make, I no longer have to buy the pricey shower cleaner from the store.
