Spring is a wonderful time to open the windows, get the fresh air moving throughout your house and clean things out. The bedrooms are a great place to deep clean in the spring as you can really air things out and change things up a bit. You may have gotten new bedding over the holidays and it’s time to get rid of the old. Here are some tips that can help.

Getting Started

Gather all your cleaning supplies, vacuums, and dusters and make sure everything is ready to go. Have several boxes on hand. One for donating or selling, one for trash and one for recycling. You may even want a box for things you are unsure if you want to keep or give away.

Do A Room Sweep

Look around the room and see what doesn’t belong in the bedroom. If it’s items that go in other rooms, place them all in a basket and set aside to put in their proper place when you are done. If there are obvious things such as knickknacks you know you are going to get rid of, remove them quickly and put in the proper box. Remove any trash, clean off nightstands and dresser tops of things that aren’t needed.

Deal With Linens

Before you begin deep cleaning you strip the beds and take down curtains. Get your washer going with the bed linens. Your comforter may not fit in your washer so you might need a trip to the laundromat. If so bag those up and put in your car. If your drapes need to be dry-cleaned, bag them up and take the bag out to your vehicle. You would be amazed at how much dirt collects in curtains and drapes.

Let The Dusting Begin

When you are dusting, just like washing windows, you always work from top to bottom. Use a long-handled duster and dust the ceiling fan. If it’s over your bed you may want to put an old sheet down to protect your mattress.

Next, take all the pictures off the wall and start working your way around the room. Dust the ceiling and then from there start at one corner and do the walls. Dust the window moldings and similar areas as you come to them. Work down each wall until you dust the baseboard. When all of that’s done, dust the picture frames. A microfiber cloth is great for this. Clean the glass with window cleaner and hang them back in place. Dust any decorative objects that need it or shelves that are in the room. This includes lamp shades. A lint brush is a perfect tool for cleaning lamp shades. Wash the windows now as well.

Spruce Up The Woodwork

If you have any woodwork in your bedroom this comes next. Use a good wood cleaner and polisher and spruce up your bed frame, dressers, bookshelves and the nightstands. Anything that is wood gets dealt with at this point.

Mattress Cleaning

Mattresses can hold things like dust and allergens. If you have a mattress cover and didn’t remove it earlier do this now and take it to the wash. If there are any spots or stains on the mattress take care of those while it can air out. Vacuum your mattress with your vacuum’s upholstery attachment. Flip it over and rotate it and then vacuum again.

Take Care Of The Floor

If you have carpet, vacuum the floor.  If you have hardwood floors, sweep them. Move any furniture that you can and vacuum or sweep behind and under it. If the baseboard needs cleaning beyond dusting do that now. If you have hardwood floors then clean them with the appropriate cleaner.

Finishing Up

Empty all trash cans and wash them out with hot soapy water if needed. Remove your boxes from the room and either toss or put in the car to get rid of immediately. Take care of any remaining items that need to be laundered put those back on the beds and rehang the curtains as soon as they are ready.

Set up your essential oil diffuser to really clean and freshen the air with a nice fresh scent. Now you’re ready to go.
