Have you ever opened your closet only to wonder how on earth you’ll get inside? Perhaps your closet doesn’t look that bad, after all, you can still get inside right?

Closets can be a catchall for anything that doesn’t have a better place to go! In general, most closets are an odd shape, and some of them just aren’t as big as we’d like them to be. Here are some simple tips to help you get your closet organized today!

Keep Your Organizational Systems Short And Sweet

Stuffing your closet full of drawers and bins won’t make it any more organized. The real secret is finding easy ways to put things away. Think about your storage solutions regarding how they will be used. Instead of just throwing stuff in there in a hodgepodge way, think of how you’ll use them.

Add hooks to your closet for hanging jewelry, put your shoes on a rack where you can quickly put them back and take them off, and hang your scarves in a way you can access easily. Sometimes simple is easier.

Don’t Forget Door Space

If you aren’t fully utilizing your door space, you need to reconsider! Your doors can be used as a valuable real estate in your closet to help relieve some of the space. Use over the door hooks, hanging racks, or even a bag on a hook to help you organize your closet.

Declutter First

Before you start putting in a bunch of bins and systems, remember that you first need to get rid of all the things you aren’t using. Start by decluttering your closet and getting rid of the excess.

Get rid of clothes you won’t be wearing, shoes that don’t fit, and scarves you don’t love. Once you have everything decluttered, you can get a better picture of what your closet organization should look like.

Put Your Items Where They Make Sense

The last thing you want to do is spend precious time digging for the stuff you need. When putting pieces in your closet, put them in a way that utilizes your space and where it makes sense.

Hang your clothes by lightest to the heaviest garment, or by sleeve length if that works best. Look for easy to reach spots for items you access regularly, and more difficult to reach places for things you only need once a year.

Maintain The Space

One of the critical parts of an organized closet is maintaining your organized space. If a system isn’t working, get rid of it and try something different! Every time you purchase a new outfit, get rid of an old one. Make these adjustments regularly to make sure your closet doesn’t overflow again.

Don’t Overcomplicate Your Systems

When organizing your closet, it can make sense to find complex systems to make all the things you own fit perfectly. You don’t need to spend any or much money to have an organized space.

If you have genuinely paired down your closet to what you need and love, the rest will fall into place. If you find yourself picking up a bunch of complicated organizing systems, you might just have too much stuff.

Declutter Regularly

Just as seasons change every year, so do your tastes and style. Your closet should be no exception! At a minimum, you should declutter your closet twice a year, but I recommend four times: at the change of each season. This will make sure any clothes from previous seasons that didn’t get worn, don’t continue to take up space in your closet.

Does It Belong In The Closet?

The final question you should ask yourself is if the item even belongs in the closet. If you have to ask yourself this question, the answer is probably no. Don’t just put it in the closet because it’s in there, see if there is a better home for this item elsewhere. You may find that it shouldn’t have been in your closet in the first place.

Your closet might not be a huge space, but it doesn’t take long for this small area to turn to chaos!
