Work Together

Get everyone in your household involved. Everyone should play a part in developing the rules or your no-spend challenge.

Members that are included in the savings challenge should help keep each other on track.

Therefore, if someone strolls into the kitchen in search of a treat, then kindly remind them that you are participating in a no-spend challenge and once the snacks are gone there are no replacements.

People tend to perform better when they are held accountable.

What also helps for our family is to have our goal posted where everyone can see it. It really does help to remind everyone of why we are doing a challenge.

Treat Yourself

Going for a whole four weeks without spending any money can seem impossible especially when you are driving past fast-food restaurants, meeting a friend at your favorite café, or browsing the internet while getting bombarded with advertising on precisely what you have been searching.

The best thing to do is to select a time, preferably once a week, to treat yourself to something.

Make sure you have a spending limit on what you will treat yourself to. While that may seem counterintuitive, leaving a small budget for family treats can sure help the morale during a no-spend challenge.

These saving money tips don’t have to be all restrictive to your spending. It’s important to make sure of what you can and can’t spend money on in order to add to that savings.

Stash The Snacks

The saying “out of sight, out of mind” really does apply to this challenge.

When it comes to snacks, it is best to stash them away.

If you have children in the house, you may need to hide them where only you will be able to find them.

You don’t need to give them up for good, just limit them. Plan so that you have enough snacks to last the full month without having to go to the store to restock.

If you can stay out of the store for any reason, do it! The more you head into the store just for one thing, then you’ll be apt to spend more money.

Believe me! I am the queen of going into a store saying I only need 5 things and coming out with $100 worth of stuff!

Focus On The Goal

The majority of people who endure the No-Spend Challenge do so to save money.

Whether you are saving money for Christmas, a vacation, or getting caught up on the bills, you have decided that it is important enough to make some sacrifices.

One way to focus on your goal is to have a daily reminder.

Some challengers simply write a reminder somewhere they know they will see it every day. You can write a note on a door, the bathroom mirror, fridge, or in the car.

If you really need to stay focused then post them in all those places. You can also include an affirmation to give you some motivation.

You can even add a sticky note to your wallet or debit card. Anything to help you stay on the goal of your savings challenge is worth it!

Entertain For Free

It is nice to go to the movies or out to eat at a restaurant with a friend, but you don’t necessarily need to spend money on entertainment.

You can enjoy the outdoors by going on walks and viewing the beautiful scenery at a state park, river, or lake during your no-spend challenge.

You can go to your local library and check out their collection of movies. Maybe you will find one you haven’t seen in a while or discover one that is new to your family.

Invite your friends to your home and enjoy dinner or watch a local game on television.

There typically are always free local events to attend in the community.

Some museums also offer free days or free after a certain hour.

One thing about these saving money tips is that you have the mindset that you’re not spending money on anything!

Take Time To Think

Impulse buying is one of the biggest culprits of overspending.

During this no-spend challenge, it is crucial to curve those temptations by overthinking your potential purchase.

Before you pull out your wallet, ask yourself whether you “need” the item and whether you can “wait” until the following month to purchase it.

If an item can fall under either category, put it back on the shelf.

Make your “wants” wait!

Keep Track

Another way to stay motivated is to see your results during your no-spend challenge.

To take a good look at your spending habits, you can keep track of how much money you have spent and how much you have saved.

You can even keep track of items that you might have splurged on!

Decided not to go get breakfast out? Saved potentially $10.

Ate at home when you were tired? Write down that $40 that you saved by eating at home.

When you are done with your challenge month, then you can compare the results with your previous spending habits and see how you did.

A No Spend Month is not an impossible task and can be accomplished by someone who is committed and determined to make a positive change in their finances.

If you follow these set steps, you will be able to make it to the end of the month and come out with money in your pocket.
