You know I have a big family with lots of kids and cats, and that means I am constantly trying to learn how to deodorize carpet and rugs… fast! Usually right before guests are about to stop by (because being prepared is no fun!).

And usually, like the mad momma I am, I can corral the kids and convinced them to mop and vacuum…but the carpets and rugs are another story. No one wants to tackle them.

I needed a quick way to teach my kids how to deodorize carpet or rugs and make them smell great. Oh and I needed it to be cheap too.

Running to the store was not an option. I did not want to buy something when I could make it instead.

Ingredients & Supplies:

Here are the supplies and ingredients you’ll need for this DIY essential oil carpet deodorizer!

  • 1 & 1/2 Cups Baking Soda (used 3/4 of a cup at a time)
  • 10 Drops Peppermint Essential Oil (price varies) (I use the Young Living brand because of their purity promise)
  • 20 Drops Thieves Essential Oil (price varies) (I use the Young Living brand because of their purity promise)
  • 20 Drops Wild Orange Essential Oil (price varies) (I use the Young Living brand because of their purity promise)

You’ll want to mix these items inside a glass jar, and if you can find an empty Parmesan shaker lid, it would work great for this recipe to shake it on your carpets or rugs.

I like to use a fork to combine the baking soda and oils together in the jar. They mix together in seconds and you just want to make sure the oils are incorporated all the way through all the powdery baking soda.

First, let the combined mixture sit in the jar for about 10-20 minutes before shaking on your carpet. (If you make this up ahead of time then it’ll be perfect!)
