In the 20 years we’ve been married, I can only list a handful of times when my husband James and I were able to get away by ourselves for a fun couples weekend.
Attempting to travel while you are on a budget can be challenging.
If you are in need of a getaway with your sweetheart, we have all the tips you need to get away for less!
Here are some practical tips to help you save money on cheap weekend getaways for couples.
Share Your Toiletries Or Use Your Hotel’s Toiletries
If you are taking a cruise or staying in a hotel, don’t bother bringing shampoo or conditioner. Hotels and even some Airbnb locations will provide you with these for free! I would recommend still packing soap, as I’ve been to many hotels that had shampoo and conditioner but no soap!
We prefer Ivory bar soap or body wash. It’s gentle enough to use on my face so I don’t have to bring an extra face wash but doesn’t have a girly scent for James sake. And it’s super affordable too!
If you bring your toiletries with you, the best way to cut down on space is to share. Bring soaps you both can use and shampoo and conditioner that will work for both of you. You can even share essential items such as shaving cream if you’d like! When you are working with limited space, this can help keep you from needing to check your bag.
Make A Picnic Out Of It
Wherever you are traveling, there are going to be tons of restaurants for you to choose from. While some places are a once in a lifetime food experience, this is not always the case.
Head to the grocery store and pick up supplies and go for a picnic for half the price of a restaurant dinner. Find a place with a great view, and enjoy some one on one time for breakfast, lunch, or even dinner!
Share A Suitcase When Possible
Whenever possible, you should try to avoid checking your luggage. Each bag you check could cost around $25, and that can add up quickly.
If you can, share one large carry on suitcase. You’ll have less to carry with you when you travel, and all your stuff will be together!
Cook Your Meals
When you are on vacation, the last thing you want to do is cook. I get it, believe me, I do! However, if you’re on a tight budget and your hotel room has a kitchen, you should use it!
You can make breakfast and lunch in the room and enjoy dinner out in order to save money while still splurging. The more you eat in, the less you’ll spend on food.
Look For Cheaper Places To Stay
A five-star luxury resort might sound like a dream, but if it’s not in the budget, you’ll need to look for something else.
If you want some privacy, but still want to save some cash on accommodations, there are some options available. You can camp if the weather allows and if you don’t mind roughing it for a few days.
If you still want to enjoy a hotel room without the hotel cost, consider booking through Airbnb. You can often get a whole apartment or even a house for the same price as a hotel room!
Here are some great ideas on how to save on your next Airbnb stay!
Keep A Close Eye On Menu Prices And Sizes
One of my favorite things to do when I sit down at a restaurant I’ve never been to is glance around at what everyone else is having. This will not only give you a sense of what to expect but also how significant the portions are.
If you’re looking to save some money while you are out, consider splitting an entree and skip the appetizers and desserts. This will not only cut down on the amount you spend when you eat out, but you won’t be overeating while on vacation either.
We also drink water. Here are another 9 ways to save money while eating out!
Downloading the TripAdvisor app will help you find great local restaurants and even let you know the prices you can expect and the favorite dishes that are served. We often check out the top five restaurants in a new area we are visiting. We have yet to be disappointed!
Vacationing together can be a great time, and it doesn’t need to be expensive. You can still enjoy a romantic getaway without having to worry about your wallet the whole time you’re away.
In fact, you can have cheap weekend getaways for couples while sticking to a tight budget and make memories that will last a lifetime.
If you follow these tips, you’ll not only have a great and memorable vacation, but you’ll spend less money, and be able to take more trips or save up for trips faster. You don’t need to be rich to take a vacation, just smart with your money.
