1. Grocery Sales Flyers Are Filled with Lies

You are familiar with the Grocery Store Sales flyer, right?

Well, unfortunately, they are not completely forthright when they put the sales inside it. You see, some of the items are only 10% Off (which may or may not be truly a good sale) and others are up to 50% Off (the BOGO) and then, still others, might be even more discounted!

The reason they create a Sales Flyer is to get you inside the store. Then, they hope to entice you with displays and smells, maybe even tastes tests so that you buy more products you were not planning for. That’s not how to get your groceries on budget.

As an accountant who loves numbers, I have watched those “Sales Cycles” and found that there is a lowest price (also called a Stock Up Price) that each and every item drops to.

And there are four ways it gets there:
  1. Simply because of the sale
  2. Sale plus a manufacturer coupon
  3. Because of the sale, plus a manufacturer coupon PLUS a store coupon
  4. The the last case scenario is when it is not on sale at all (so the item is Regular Price), but the Manufacturer Coupon and Store Coupon applicable to the item at the time are so high that they drop that item down to the lowest price (the Stock Up Price) even though it is not even on sale!

If you are paying attention to the cycle of the sales, then you can buy items when they are at the lowest price simply because of the sale and never have to cut a coupon again. Or never have to feel guilty for not shopping with a coupon… ever again!

2. Track Your Family’s Expensive Items

Identify the 10 or 15 items your family uses most often, with emphasis on the more expensive items.

Track their prices and how often they go on sale.

When you see it on sale at that lowest price, buy enough (or stock up) to last until the next sale. Typically this means buying enough to last 12 weeks.

By tracking those 10-15 items, you will learn the Sales Cycle of your favorite products. Then you will be able to determine approximately how much to buy so that you can stock up to last until the sale comes up again (until the price drops to that lowest price again).

A common thing I hear people say is that they “shop the BOGO’s” and that’s a great thing to do, SO LONG AS you are sure that the BOGO sale is truly the best price for that product.
