Question:

“I haven’t been able to print Red Plum and Smart Source coupons in AGES on my Mac. I’ve updated my java but it says I haven’t. I’ve tried a couple different browsers and it still won’t work. It’s been so frustrating missing out on great deals because I can’t print, so any help would be appreciated.”

Answer:

I have been a happy Mac user for several years now! There have been times that I experienced trouble printing coupons from my Mac, though. Here are some things I have found (from research and trial-and-error) to fix coupon printing issues. (Many of these fixes will apply to PC users as well.)

Operating system update:
Start by making sure you have the latest Mac operating system installed. Click the little apple icon in the top left corner of your screen and then choose “About this Mac.” The latest version is 10.9.5. Click the “Software Update…” button to make sure you have the latest version installed and that all your software is up to date.

Browser update:
The next thing to check is each browser you use. Make sure you have all the latest updates for Safari, Firefox, Chrome or whatever browser(s) you use. NOTE: I do not recommend using Internet Explorer for Mac or PCs. Not all coupon application software supports Internet Explorer.

You will have times that a coupon site might not work with every browser. You need to make sure you have more than one browser installed on your computer. Each browser will have updates at different times. If a browser updates to a newer version of Java and the coupon printing site isn’t using the same version, you will not be able to print the coupons. Since each browser updates at different times, you will usually be able to find at least one browser that works. The ones I use the most are Firefox, Chrome and Safari in that order.

Enable Java:
Then check your Java. You’ll need to make sure Java is up to date in each Browser you use AND it also needs to be activated on a Mac in “Utilities.” You will need to update Java in “Utilities” after each operating system upgrade (i.e. new version of OS X Lion).

To enable Java through Java Preferences in Mac OS X “Utilities”, do the following:

  1. Open the Finder.
  2. Go to Applications > Utilities > Java Preferences.
    • If you do not have a Java Preferences icon here, skip these instructions and proceed with enabling Java in Safari and any other browsers, as described below. Once Java has been enabled here, the Java Preferences icon will no longer appear.
  3. Under the General tab, put a check mark next to Enable applet plug-in and Web Start applications.
  4. Also make sure all versions of Java have a check mark next to them.
  5. Close Java Preferences.

Java has now been enabled through Java Preferences.

To enable Java in your Safari browser, do the following:

  1. Launch Safari.
  2. Click Safari > Preferences….
  3. Click the Security tab.
  4. Put a check mark next to Enable Java.
  5. Close the preferences window.

Java is now enabled in Safari.

There are links with directions to enable Java on other browsers in THIS POST.
(There are also other things you can try in this post, but they are not Mac specific.)

Update Coupon Printer Applications:
Coupon Printer Applications are sometimes updated. If you are still having problems printing, you can uninstall and reinstall these applications.

Coupons.com Coupon Printer:

  1. Open the Finder
  2. Go to Applications > Coupons
  3. Click Uninstall Coupon Printing Software
  4. Reinstall the Coupons.com Coupon Printer

Target Coupon Savings Printer:

  1. Open the Finder
  2. Go to Applications > Catalina – Print Savings
  3. Click UninstallCatalinaSavingsPrinter
  4. Go to the Target Printable Coupons page and select a coupon (choose a coupon you do not want to use). Then click the “print selected coupons” button at the bottom. You will be prompted to install the Savings Printer Activator plug-in. Without this plug-in you will not be able to print Target coupons.
For more about Target printable coupons, see the Target Coupons FAQ page.

Plugins for your browsers:
The browser I use most is Firefox. The current Firefox plugins I am running are these:

  • Coupons Inc., Coupon Printing FireFox Plugin Version 1.1.10
  • Java Applet Plug-in Java 8 Update 51
  • Catalina Savings Printer Plugin 1.0

~ I hope that helps and you are up and printing soon!!!
