Don’t you just love a warm custom fleece blanket in the winter? I know I do!

It’s so great to snuggle underneath it watching a movie with your family. Ahh, and the roaring fire crackling…Oh, wait. That part only happens in my dreams living in Florida. But still, I do love a great blanket when it gets cold (and it does get cold in Florida, contrary to popular beliefs!).

Anyway, I’m always looking for ways to make affordable, handmade gifts that don’t take a lot of time.

Plus, making things with my family is so fun! And knowing we are saving money on our gifts during the year, helps to keep our budget in check.

These custom fleece blanket gifts are so easy to make and it makes the best gift for babies, toddlers, kids, and even adults.

This is a no-sew custom fleece blanket, which makes it even better!

With just 4 supplies needed, you won’t be spending a bundle on this custom fleece blanket, and it will definitely be appreciated for years and years to come.

This gift is one that shows that it was obviously created with love and it only takes a little bit of time out of your day to make it!

What makes this a custom fleece blanket is that you can personalize it by choosing the colors you think the recipient would like! How neat is that?!

It can be finished in a total of 1 hour and that includes measuring, cutting and tieing to make it the very best custom fleece blanket!

And it won’t cost you an arm or a leg either!

Each Homemade Gift has to meet 5 stipulations in order to maximize your money and make it easy for a busy mom to do:

  1. Easy to obtain supplies –  Supplies are things you might already have on hand or are easy to find at Walmart or a craft store so you can get them in the same day you want to make it.
  2. Easy to make –  Supplies are easy to work with or use so that anyone could do it… not caustic… so you could do the craft with your kids.
  3. Quick to make –  It can be made in 30 minutes or less so it’s possible to make this gift in the middle of the night with products you most likely already have on hand. (Note: This project takes a little longer, but you can do it without even looking at the scarf. Or you can have your kids help like I did to make it in less time.)
  4. Cheap to make – You should be able to make the project without spending more than $10.
  5. Substantial – Each gift is “big” enough that you’ll feel confident giving it alone and not having to add a gift card to it.
    BONUSES:
    Multiple uses –
Multiple gifts can be made out of the same supplies giving you options to use up all the supplies you buy.

First, figure out how much yardage you need to each project. One yard is perfect for babies, whereas, two yards is perfect for kids and adults for a lap blanket.

This no-sew custom fleece blanket does not even require a sewing machine! Yahoo!

There are two types of fleece to consider purchasing. Choose a “No Pill Fleece” for your custom fleece blanket. No pill fleece won’t pill which means it won’t bead up after regular use. It may be a bit more expensive but will last and be softer for longer.

The double sided fleece makes this a nice and warm custom fleece blanket. And the coordinating colors make it so pretty.

You must have sharp scissors for this project. Fleece is dense making it hard to cut through if you have dull scissors. If you plan on making several of these, go ahead and purchase a new pair of scissors and use them ONLY for fabric. This will make your scissors last longer. Plus good sharp scissors will leave your fleece edges sharp and neat and not jagged. Plus, with the amount of cutting you will need to do on this project, sharp scissors will also save your hand from hurting.

Directions For Making A Custom Fleece Blanket:

Step 1: Cut Off The Selvage Edge

With your sharp scissors, cut off the selvage edges.

The selvage edge is the side where the machine held the fabric while it was beoing printed. These usually are colored differently (white with writing) than the print on the fleece and they won’t look good if you leave them on. There also may be some frayed or jagged edges that you will want to trim off before you start.

Step 2: Measure & Cut Corners First

On a flat surface lay your solid colored fleece flat out and overlay with the patterned fleece.

Be sure the patterned fleece pattern is facing upward and try to align the pieces as best as possible. You can pin them together so they don’t slide around on you.

Using your ruler, measure a 4 inch square from each corner as this will be your end pieces.

Then using sharp scissors simply cut out a simple square out of the corner of the fabric.

You can use a Vanishing Fabric Marker found with the sewing notions in a craft store to mark your measurements. It will disappear leaving no mark and is perfect for making measurements.

This is just the start of a beautiful custom fleece blanket!

Step 3: Cut The Ties

Using a vanishing marker, mark every 1 inch down each side. This is where you will cut to make the ties for your custom fleece blanket.

If you are afraid you will cut too high, measure up 4 inches from each side and pin a line all the way across, from corner to corner. You will cut to this line each time you cut a tie. You could also put a piece of tape on your scissors that’s 4 inches down from the point so you know where to cut in the fabric.

This can also be done quickly with a rotary cutter and self-healing cutting mat. Just measure and cut with your rotary cutter every inch.

Then, starting with any side, start cutting the ties 4 inches in length and be sure they line up with your cut corners or cut to the line you made.

Do this until you have reached the end of each side. We cut all the slits for the entire blanket before tying each strip, but you could also cut and tie each section as you go.

Step 4: Tack The Rest Of The Blanket

While this step is really only necessary for larger blankets (over 1 yard), it helps the two layers of fleece stay together.

Using a needle and thread make a small “tack” by going through both layers of fleece and then tying the thread into a small knot.

Do this in several places all over the blanket (I did 10 little knots in inconspicuous spots all over this blanket).

Step 5: Tie Fabric Together

Take the bottom piece of fleece and tie a double knot with the top slit to combine the fleeces together.

All you need is a double knot for every 2 pieces of fleece, and this will keep your blanket intact for a long time.

This is how this custom fleece blanket stays together.

I’m sure you don’t mind this being a no-sew custom fleece blanket now! It’s so easy!

This is one of those easy projects that allows you to catch up on your favorite TV shows while you’re crafting up this special project.

Or you can have your kids help you tie it in record time!
