The Annual Cost

Many people love to stop every day at their local coffee shop to enjoy a freshly made cup of coffee, cappuccino, espresso, or the iced cold frappe.

But in order to figure out how much it’s costing you, you need to take a hard look at your spending habits…or, coffee habits in this case. Because we all know it’s not just a coffee a day. It’s a coffee and a cookie, or donut, or breakfast sandwich because you forgot to eat again.

It’s that extra coffee to thank a coworker or your work friend…or it’s that sweet lemon loaf splurge and a coffee as you are running errands through Target.

Most of the time it’s not just coffee and it’s not just $3 per order. It’s more…way more. But in this case, we’ll stick to just coffee to see how much we are potentially spending. You’ll have to do some math to figure out how much you actually are spending.

The average price for a cup of coffee ranges from $3.40 to $4.40 depending on the size.

If you chose to purchase a cup of coffee every day of the week, then you would pay between $1,240 up to $1,600 annually.

That’s 1 cup, per day, every day of the year = up to $1,600!

If you are drinking two or more cups a day, then you spend around $2,480 to $3200 annually.

That’s 2 large cups, per day, every day of the year = up to $3,200!

Brew Your Own At Home

I am going to let you in on a secret. You can brew a fresh, great-tasting cup of coffee right in your kitchen!

All it takes is a little bit of time and thought…like letting it brew before you get in the shower kind of time…you can do that!

To get that freshly brewed taste, you might want some things to make this happen. While these things are not necessarily needed, they will give you that freshly ground taste that you love from the coffee shop.

The Tools

First, you will need to purchase a coffee bean grinder. Luckily you can buy one for around fifteen dollars. By grinding your beans, you can guarantee that the coffee grounds are fresh and are not going stale.

Second, if you are a cappuccino or latte drinker, you will want to purchase a milk frother. Again you can buy one very cheaply for under fifteen dollars. A frother will help the milk foam which is a requirement for making those delicious light tasting drinks.

Third, you need to purchase some great tasting beans. Experiment with different flavors and brands to find that great tasting coffee that you wouldn’t mind drinking the rest of the year.

Fourth, if you love those fancy drinks, you’re also going to need some recipes! Pinterest is full of fancy coffee recipes and coffee house copy cat recipes that will give you the same taste as the coffee shop.

Right now, I am loving my hot water kettle and a pour-over coffee dripper. The kettle stays on all day so that I can have a hot cup of coffee any time I want to. It only takes a couple of minutes to make and it’s so easy!

If you love iced coffee, you can easily brew your own at home too! All you need is an iced coffee brewing pitcher. You add water and coffee grounds to the pitcher at night, and you have freshly brewed iced coffee in the morning!

But again, a regular coffee pot will work just fine too! The point is to save money while still getting your caffeine fix for the day.

The Savings:

Walmart Great Value Coffee 24.2 oz @ $6.57 (makes up to 200 cups) = approx. 3¢ per cup
3¢ per cup x 365 days = $11 a year

Now, this is not including filters, creamer, sugar, or anything else you like in your coffee, but I hope this does give you an idea of how much you could be saving.

Savings Of One Cup Per Day: $1,600 (coffee house spending) – $11 (brewing at home) = $1,589 saved per year!

Now, this is how to save for a vacation! A simple change with a big vacation savings impact!

Replace It

If you are drinking coffee solely for the caffeine, then you should consider a cheaper and healthier alternative to boost your energy.

There are numerous recipes available online for different types of natural energy drinks. These drinks include ingredients such as citrus, ginger root, turmeric, and honey.

You can also make all kinds of drinks including delicious fruit smoothies that will not only give you energy but also leave your body feeling refreshed.

If you enjoy a nice hot drink and want something similar to coffee, then you might want to experiment with different flavored teas or hot chocolate that doesn’t cost as much as coffee.

There are many alternatives, just make sure to keep in mind the value since you are trying to save money.

I love Oolong Tea. It has a smooth taste and still has a good amount of caffeine. So If you still want a hot drink, you could try this!

The Savings:

Prince Of Peace Organic Oolong Tea 100 ct box @ $8.86 = 9¢ per cup
9¢ per cup, per day = $32.85

Now, this is not including milk, sugar, or honey for your tea…but you get the savings gist.

Savings Of One Cup Per Day: $1,600 (coffee house spending) – $32.85 (brewing at home) = $1,567.15 saved per year!

Still, some great potential vacation savings just waiting to be saved!

Give It Up

I understand that this probably sounds radical and this might not be the best alternative for everyone.

Imagine being able to entirely give up drinking coffee and saving money for your family vacation. It may be worth it to at least give it a try and save as much as you can towards your vacation savings.

If you choose to travel this path, then proceed gradually towards weaning yourself off of the caffeine to help prevent any withdrawal symptoms.

After a few days, your body will start to adjust, and you will begin to feel better once the caffeine leaves your system.

Make sure to keep hydrated and stay healthy.

You will be happy when you start to feel better physically and financially.

Now it is up to you to decide on whether you will save money by either brewing, replacing, or giving up your coffee for a year.

Are you willing to make the sacrifice to save money for your dream vacation?
