February

Sooner or later just about everything goes on sale. Knowing when items are at their lowest prices and buying them before you need them is a shopping technique that can save you hundreds of dollars every year on all kinds of items from groceries to gifts!

February Warning:
Valentine’s Day shopping can be dangerous to your budget!  The traditional Valentine gifts (jewelry, flowers, perfume, chocolate) are in such high demand this month that it’s difficult to find a good deal.  Save some money by thinking outside-the-box for your Sweetie’s gift this year.

Best Things To Buy In February:

From the Grocery Stores

  • Canned Fruits and Vegetables
February is National Canned Food month, so you’ll find lots of these items on sale in your grocery stores now.
  • Oatmeal, Grits, Waffles & more Hot Breakfast Items
February is also National Hot Breakfast month.  Look for sales and coupons for these items.
  • Heart Healthy Foods
Heart Health is emphasized in February. Things like Aspirin, supplements and heart-healthy spreads and butters will be on sale.

From the Drugstores

Here are some of the items you’ll find at great prices in drugstores this month:

  • Aspirin
  • Condoms
  • Dental floss
  • Fragrances
  • Heart supplements
  • Humidifiers
  • KY Products
  • Monistat
  • Mouthwash
  • Toothpaste/Toothbrushes

In Season Produce

The cheapest produce in stores and at local farmer’s markets is always what’s in season. Here are February’s in-season fruits and veggies:

  • Beets
  • Brussels Sprouts
  • Cabbage
  • Cauliflower
  • Celery
  • Citrus (including oranges, grapefruit and tangerines)
  • Kale (and other greens like Collards, Mustard and Turnips)
  • Leeks
  • Lemons
  • Onions
  • Pears
  • Sweet Potatoes

Jewelry, Flowers, Perfume

While you won’t find deals on these popular Valentine’s Day gifts early in the month, you might be in luck late in February!  Keep an eye out for AFTER Valentine’s Day savings!

Furniture

President’s Day weekend traditionally offers great discounts on furniture.

Tax Software

You’ll see lots of discounts on tax software this month from companies such as H&R Block and TurboTax.
(Who’s doing their taxes early this year?)

Video Games

The same newly-released titles that were so desirable at Christmas time are now likely on sale!  If you were able to resist purchasing them a couple of months ago, your patience is about to be rewarded.  If you did purchase some of those newly-released games in early winter, you should be able to trade them in toward new or slightly used games now for a big discount.

Electronics

The Consumer Electronics Show took place in January, so many retailers will be clearing out some inventory in February…just in time for Super Bowl Sunday. Look for low prices on large HDTVs, speakers, surround-sound systems and other components.

Boats

The cold winter months don’t attract a lot of boat buyers, so dealers slash prices in an effort to create some off-season business. If you’re in the market for a boat, February is a great time to buy.

Winter Clothing

The clearance racks will be bursting with winter-wear this month! Time to shop for next winter’s layers!

Here are some great places to shop for deals this month:
Amazon, Belle Chic, Best Buy, GameStop, Kohls

What NOT To Buy in February:

Here are a few of the items you’ll want to purchase another time:

  • Jewelry (wait till after the 14th!)
  • Flowers (wait till after the 14th!)
  • Perfume (wait till after the 14th!)
  • Digital Cameras
  • Patio Furniture –  The next big sales happen around Memorial Day.
