Fox 13 LogoDid you catch our Savings Segment this morning on Fox?  We are honored to be a featured on Good Day Tampa Bay each Sunday to share our knowledge about coupons and how to get the most for your money!  This week's topic was all about why your cart is a mess, and how to clean it up! Click on the image below to watch it live!

Fox 1-19-14Here is a little more information for you:

  1. Non-Intended Items – The first lesson in saving money is that if you Fail to Plan, you are Planning to Fail. But this doesn’t require a belly-ache! Let’s make it easy…even if you sit in your CAR and make the list, you cannot step foot inside that store without a LIST. You have to be ruthless about disciplining your shopping sprees for just a couple weeks in order to teach yourself how to be a seasoned list maker.
  2. Plan Your Perishables – Statistics show that we purchase too many veggies and fruits to eat before they go bad. Force yourself to think in ONE WEEK increments. That means when you get home, if you can’t eat it in a week…FREEZE IT. We tend to remember our freezer space and not over-spend in that area. When the perishables start to horn in, you will spend less on all of it.
  3. Conveniently EXPENSIVE – all those foods that are easier to buy than make…the most expensive ones are the produce ones. Plan your shopping trip with the time to “process” foods when you get home…cut up the pineapple, slice the apples, squeeze the lemons…your wallet says “Thank You”.
  4. Just Say No To…Kids – until you are a seasoned couponer, you’ve got to trade baby sitting time with a friend. Or have the spouse put them to bed and leave an hour before bedtime. All those extra purchases that the kids talk you into…I promise it is more than you think. And once they taste that quick snack (pretzel combos for example) they will hound you for them again and again!
  5. Your Own Pantry – Shop in your own pantry before trekking to the store (or stopping off on your way home from work) just to buy something you already have. Again…this relates to point #1 – having a PLAN. If your pantry is organized then you will easily see what you have before you go and buy more.

AND the one fail safe method: Use Cash – Switching to a cash-only spending budget for groceries will force you to evaluate every item you have in your shopping cart! You CAN do this!
