After making this DIY organic lip balm for my family as a creative (and wildly successful) Christmas Present, I thought it would be fun to share with you how easy and inexpensive it is to make your own Organic Lip Balm (aka chapstick).

You can whip up a batch in about 10 minutes if you have the ingredients on hand.

I always make sure I have the ingredients on hand in case I need to whip up a quick thoughtful gift for someone at the last minute!

It’s so easy, if you can whip up a cake – you can make this easy DIY organic lip balm recipe!

And, they make for a great gift or gift topper!

Plus, you’ll be saving money being able to be creative and make something with your own hands! Isn’t that fun, too?!!

So let’s get busy and make some with this easy orgnaic lip balm recipe!

Organic Lip Balm Ingredients:

  • 1 Tablespoon Beeswax Pellets (for the recipe I made when I took these pictures, I used beeswax sticks, but its much easier to use these pellets instead)
  • 3 Tablespoons Coconut Oil (I get a nice large container of it from Costco for $16 because we also use it for cooking)
  • 2 Teaspoons Cocoa Butter (you could use Shea Butter instead, but you need to increase the Beeswax to 2 Tbs)
  • 1 Tablespoon Sweet Almond Oil (you can also use Olive Oil instead, it will just make it slightly more yellow in color as you can see in one of the pictures below)
  • 8-10 drops Vitamin E Oil (one drop per lip balm. It doesn’t matter if you get the capsules or the oil in a bottle, both work just fine)

You will also need:

  • Enough Toothpicks to mix the oils into each lip balm (I use one toothpick per tube to ensure I don’t mix flavors)
  • 20 Lip Balm Containers (buy them here). This recipe will fill twenty .15oz Tubes (that’s the normal chapstick size tube):
  • Use 2-4 drops Essential Oil of your choice to flavor the lip balms (I personally use Young Living Essential Oils because of their organic and therapeutic qualities)

Organic Lip Balm Directions:

Step 1:

Add all of the DIY organic lip balm ingredients in a double boiler over water to melt everything together EXCEPT Vitamin E and Essential Oils.

I like to mix with a knife because this easy DIY organic lip balm recipe is easy to wipe off for clean up.

Step 2:

You will want to be sure your double boiler has a spout for pouring. Otherwise, you might want to use a glass measuring cup with spout inside a small saucepan with about an inch of water.

It needs to be easy to pour into the lip balm containers quickly before it cools.

Step 3:

Once fully melted (the beeswax takes the longest), remove the bowl from heat and pour the easy orgnaic lip balm recipe about halfway up in the tube.

Step 4:

QUICKLY –  add a drop of Vitamin E to the tube, then 2-4 drops of Essential Oils into each tube and use toothpick to mix.

It helps to have an assembly line ready to go with the droppers and bottles. Plus, it’s great family time for the older kids to help!

Step 5:

IMMEDIATELY fill the rest of the tube with the oil of the DIY organic lip balm before it all hardens and MIX QUICKLY.

Note: if it starts to harden and you are still mixing it will not have a smooth top. If you wait too long the layers might not adhere to each other. So these steps have to be done quickly.

If it happens to harden before you can get the oil of the easy orgnaic lip balm recipe mixed in properly, just scrape it back out of the tube (or microwave it for a few seconds) to make it melty again. Then mix it and then allow it to dry with a nice smooth top.

Notice how this looks kinda yellow in color, that’s because of the olive oil.

It will dry to a white color but will be clear on the lips. And it’s oh so nourishing to your lips too! It’s still my favorite easy DIY organic lip balm recipe ever!

Easy Organic Lip Balm Recipe Tips

Only fill 3-4 tubes at a time in order to have time to mix before they harden.

If the mixture starts to harden in your double boiler in between the second batch of 4 tubes, return the boiler to the hot pot/water and let it melt again. It will re-melt in seconds and be ready for to use again.

Clean Up is SUPER simple. Use a paper towel to wipe everything off while the liquid is still warm. The knife, and both pans (double boiler) will wipe clean in no time flat. Follow up with soapy warm water if you want.

As you can see, making these essential oil lip balms is so easy!

Don’t they make for a great gift or gift topper too?!!

And, you’ll be saving money giving a great gift and being able to be creative and make something with your own hands!
