If grocery stores were in a mall, Publix would be the magnet store! Many of my friends used to think that they could never shop at Publix because they thought it was too expensive or even “uppity.”

Then they took that first scary trip armed with coupons and became dedicated Publix fans from that day forward.

My families love for Publix began before I was even born. My grandmother moved to Florida in the early 1970’s when she started shopping at their grocery store and she passed that same love of the store down to my Mom (along with a few tips for saving money) who then taught me how to save there as well. We’ve always figured out ways to save so that we could enjoy the benefits of shopping at a seemingly high-end grocery store.

In addition to Publix’s famous “BOGOs” (Buy One, Get One Sale), there are quite a few secrets to couponing at Publix that you may not know. Check out these secret savings tips to save more at Publix!

Once my friends learned how to strategically shop at Publix, they say how wonderful it is to shop in a clean, well-organized store and realized that they actually got better stuff and paid less than Walmart! {Shocking, I know!!}

1. Rainchecks Extend The Life Of Coupons

There’s nothing more frustrating than getting all excited for a stellar deal only to arrive at the store and find an empty shelf! You missed out!

Actually, you didn’t!

At Publix, all you have to do is head up to the Customer Service Counter and simply ask for a “raincheck”.

They will look the item up in the sale flyer to get the specifications and print you a rain check to use later.

The best part is that not only will the raincheck extend the life of that particular sale, but it will also extend the life of your coupon, in case it expires before you get back to the store.

So long as the date on the raincheck has not expired, they will accept the coupon too!

And this “secret” is listed directly in the Publix Coupon Policy FAQ’s (so you know you are not doing anything sneaky). I’d suggest you read more about the Publix Coupon Policy here, then print it to keep with your coupon book.

These Publix coupon tips are starting out hot to save you big money this year!

2. “Stack” To Save More When Couponing At Publix

Publix actually has 3 sales going on at any one time. The Weekly Ad (which contains all their famous, BOGO Sales), and then two additional sales flyers, the “Purple Flyer” which has extra sales on Health & Beauty products, and the “Green Flyer“, which has additional sales on more Grocery items.

Here’s where it gets good: In addition to allowing coupons to be used on each item in their BOGO sales, which means you can use a coupon on the “Buy One” and then also a coupon on the “Get One”, there are additional store coupons in the Purple and Green Flyers!

That means you can “stack” your manufacturer’s coupons (MQs) along with Publix store coupons (SQs) on top of the already reduced prices and you’ll recognize major savings, often making products free or when they pay you to take it home (that’s called “overage”)!

You can find each of the Purple or Green flyers in the stores, get them out of the Sunday newspaper, or even print them online.

3. Competitors Are Welcome!

Ever see a coupon and wish that you could use it at Publix, instead of the store it’s for? Me too! And luckily at Publix, you can do that!

Each Publix store has its own list of competitor stores coupons that they will accept.

Which competitor coupons are accepted depends on which competitor stores are nearby.

Check out the list of competitors here to know before you go couponing at Publix or ask at your customer service desk which store coupons they accept.

4. Coupons For Competitor Gift Cards Are Welcome Too!

Publix will even accept coupons for competitor’s private label brand items.

Example: You have a Target coupon to receive a $5 Gift Card when you buy $20 of Meat or Seafood. Here’s what you do to use the coupon at Publix:

  1. Make sure your store considers Target a competitor by calling your local store or checking this master store competitor list.
  2. Choose $20 of Fresh meat or seafood. The details on the coupon state it can be “Fresh, Frozen, Deli” so choose something from those areas at Publix.
  3. At the register, hand over the Target coupon. The Publix Cashier will give you a $5 Publix Gift Card to use on your next shopping trip.

Pretty neat, right?! This is one of my favorite Publix saving tips!

5. Overage Is Not A Bad Word

“Overage” happens when the value of your coupons is higher than the products you are buying.

Let me explain the photo above, which was a deal that happened last year. Each product cost for $2.99 and the manufacturer’s coupon was for $4.99.That means for each $2.99 product that you purchase, and use a $4.99 coupon, you have $2 extra to spend on other things.

In other words, the store will be reimbursed by the manufacturer $4.99, so they are passing that full amount on to you, the customer. But you are choosing to purchase an item for $2.99 and using the other $2 towards other groceries.

A more common example you will see is when you buy a product for $2.49 and you have a store coupon for $2 and a manufacturer coupon for $1, that means you have $3 in coupons to pay for a product that’s $2.49. You have 51¢ in “Overage” ($2.49 product total – $3 coupon total = negative 51¢)

In other words, the store is “paying you” 51¢ to try that product.

Winning and keeping you as a customer is so important to Publix, they happily recognize and give you overage when you use coupons that equal a higher total than your grocery bill!

As a courtesy, I try to always spend something because it helps to reduce confusion at the cash register.

However, on occasion we have gotten down to the last coupon to be scanned and ended up with a negative balance, meaning they owed me money, and with no questions asked, they simply load the amount on a Publix gift card, hand it to me with my receipt, and say “thank you” with a kind smile.

Who doesn’t like FREE MONEY?

6. Digital Couponing At Publix

Lots of retailers have started offering digital coupons.  These are manufacturer’s coupons that are deducted from your total at the register.

Just set up an account on the Publix website and “clip” the coupons to add them to your account. At the register, simply enter your phone number into the keypad where you swipe your debit/credit card and the register will automatically deduct any coupons that apply to your order.

The bonus of digital is if you happen to run into the store to purchase one of something that you don’t have a paper coupon for, but there is a digital coupon. You’ll reap the savings without ever having touched a pair of scissors!

Learn exactly how to use Publix Digital Coupons. I love seeing that extra dollar or two magically come off my total at the register from the digital coupons that I had clipped. Win!

7. The Publix Promise = FREE Product

Ever heard of the Publix Promise? Well just in case you haven’t, it’s when an item scans higher at the cash register than the price listed on the shelf or advertised in one of their sale flyers then you get it for free!

Usually Publix is right on their game when it comes to pricing and 99.9% of the time there is never an issue. However, whatever the reason, if it scans wrong you get it free.

Note: the Publix Promise applies to one (1) item, so if you are buying multiples and they all scan wrong, you will get the first one free and the others at the sale price that should’ve been listed.

Getting and keeping your business is paramount to Publix, and that is why they offer the Publix Promise.

8. Bonus Rebates For FREE Gift Cards

Publix typically runs several bonus rebate promotions with companies such as P&G or ConAgra.

All you have to do is shop the special sales (and yes, you can use coupons) for certain items and then submit your receipt to a special rebate website and they’ll send you a $10 Publix Gift Card as a bonus.

You’ll see these special offers posted around the store with special displays or sometimes on the refrigerator and freezer doors.

That’s just FREE money!

9. Special Order For Your Stockpile

Publix has a limit of (10) of the same items you can purchase off the shelf in a single shopping trip. This is different than their limit of eight coupons per item. They do this not to limit how much you can buy, but rather, it’s a means to keep some stock on the shelf for everyone.

If you want to buy a large amount of an item, just give them a quick call before the sale. You can place a special order to arrive during the time of the sale. Check with your own store manager to see if any special guidelines apply (such as you might need to place the order in-store instead of over the phone to sign any forms confirming that you will pick the items up). Easy Peasy.

10. Gas Card Deals

About once a month Publix offers a gas card deal that is just hard to beat – anywhere!

You’ll find a special coupon for $10 Off a $50 Gas Gift Card in the weekly ad or sometimes in one of the advantage flyers. You can use this coupon when you purchase $50 in groceries.

The neat part is that Publix will allow you to buy multiple gas cards at one time so long as you have met the $50 grocery requirement – before coupons!

So let’s say you have $200 in groceries, you could purchase four (4) gas cards, immediately saving $40 off your total! That’s the equivalent of a free tank of gas!

I combine this discount with my Shell Fuel Reward savings to get another FREE tank of gas each month by getting a Shell Gas Gift Card at Publix.

11. Order Deli Items Online

Want to avoid the hassle of going up and down the aisles or the long line at the deli? Save time by placing your deli order online or through the Publix app on your smartphone.

You can specify the date and time you want to pick it up and they’ll have it ready. When you arrive at the store, just stop by the Deli and pick it up (it is typically in a refrigerated bin, no need to even take a number!).

Sometimes there are even deli coupons to save you even more in the Publix Green (Grocery) Advantage Flyer!
