Recipe #1: Homemade Cleaning Wipes With Bleach

While I’ve been using this recipe for a while, I never thought about sharing it until recently. The Corona sure has hit our country hard and I know we’ve all been disinfecting like crazy.

One thing to mention with bleach is that you should wear rubber gloves while using these wipes. Bleach can be harmful to the skin and cause irritation. But if you are looking to make some DIY cleaning wipes that disinfect, this is one of the best recipes to use.

So here’s what you’ll need:

  • 2 Tbsp. Bleach @ $1.67 2 quarts = 3¢
  • 2 pkgs. Reusable cleaning wipes @ $1.49 = $2.98
  • Scissors
  • Container to put your wipes in
  • 1 Tbsp. Dawn Dish Detergent @ $1.49 for 10.3 oz = 14¢
  • Measuring Cup
  • Spoon to stir the mixture
  • 2 cups Purified or Reverse Osmosis Water = $0

I also add 10 drops of either Thieves or Purification Essential Oil. (I use the Young Living brand because of their purity promise.) But this is optional.

Directions:

  1. Open up your reusable cleaning wipes and cut them in half. The wipes that I bought from Publix were a 4 pack for only $1.49. They were large enough at 13.75″ by 20″ but I cut them in half for easier wiping. This gave me 8 large wipes and they work well at that size.
  2. After you have cut them all in half, add them to your container. Your container should have a tight fitting-air tight lid.
  3. In a measuring cup, add the water, bleach, and Dawn. Stir well.
  4. Pour them over your wipes.
  5. If you have too much liquid in the container, ring out the wipes before taking them out of the container.
  6. When you are done cleaning with them, throw them in with a load of white laundry, or wash them in a small load by themselves.
CAUTION: Do not throw them in with another load of laundry! Although the bleach amount is small, it may cause some discoloration.

If you would like to make a large batch of this cleaning solution, here is the formula from Clorox: 1/3 cup bleach to 1 gallon of water. Also, add 8 Tablespoons of Dawn to this mixture.

Total Up-Front Cost (not including container or water): $6.14 total (bleach, 2 pkgs. of wipes, and Dawn) OR 17¢ each time you refresh the wipes container with new disinfecting liquid.

If you do not have distilled water or reverse osmosis water, you can also add 85¢ to your total. That is how much it costs at a local grocery store.

Recipe #2: DIY Cleaning Wipes With Alcohol

This is another recipe that I use when I run out of bleach. This recipe is also great at disinfecting as long as you use Rubbing Alcohol, or you use alcohol that is at least 70% proof or higher.

I always feel funny running into an alcohol store even to buy alcohol to clean as in my Disinfecting Spray or when I make Vanilla extract!

So here’s what you’ll need to make these reusable disinfecting cleaning wipes:

  • 1/2 Cup Rubbing Alcohol @ 97¢ 8 oz = 24¢
  • 2 pkgs. Reusable cleaning wipes @ $1.49 = $2.98
  • Scissors
  • Container to put your wipes in
  • 1 Tbsp. Dawn Dish Detergent @ $1.49 for 10.3 oz = 14¢
  • Measuring Cup
  • Spoon to stir the mixture
  • 2 cups Purified or Reverse Osmosis Water = $0

You can also add essentials oils to your wipes. I add 10 drops of Thieves or Purification Essential Oil. (I use the Young Living brand because of their purity promise.) But this is up to you.

Directions:

  1. Open up and cut your reusable cleaning wipes and in half.
  2. Add them to your container with a tight fitting-air tight lid.
  3. Add the water, bleach, and Dawn to a measuring cup and stir well.
  4. Pour the mixture over your wipes.
  5. Ring out the wipes before taking them out of the container if there is too much liquid.
  6. You can throw these reusable disinfecting cleaning wipes into a load of wash. Once the load is done, I take them out and just add them back into the container as they don’t need to be dried.

Total Up-Front Cost (not including container or water): $5.44 total (alcohol, 2 pkgs. of wipes, and Dawn) OR 38¢ each time you refresh the wipes container with new disinfecting liquid.

Also, add 85¢ if you do not have distilled water or reverse osmosis water on hand to your total. You can also make distilled water with these simple directions.

Recipe #3: Reusable Disinfecting Cleaning Wipes With Vinegar

Before your brain starts going haywire with the thought that Vinegar doesn’t kill Covid – I know. BUT, I did want to give you another option just in case you can’t find Bleach, Rubbing Alcohol, or any 70 proof or higher alcohol for your DIY cleaning wipes. Because I know that the shelves were cleared out and we couldn’t find anything.

Vinegar is effective in killing many bacteria including Tuberculosis.

I do use this DIY cleaning wipes recipe in the bathrooms as a daily clean up wipe. It helps to keep our bathroom clean and fresh smelling. I do throw these used cleaning wipes into our regular laundry. Then they go back into the container after the wash.

So here’s what you’ll need to make these reusable disinfecting cleaning wipes:

  • 2 Cups White Vinegar @ $2.25 64 oz = 56¢
  • 2 pkgs. Reusable cleaning wipes @ $1.49 = $2.98
  • Scissors
  • Container to put your wipes in
  • 1 Tbsp. Dawn Dish Detergent @ $1.49 for 10.3 oz = 14¢
  • Measuring Cup
  • Spoon to stir the mixture

Bonus Recipe: To-Go Disinfecting Wipes

Since you know I love Disney, but I don’t love the germs, I gotta have both hand sanitizing spray AND hand sanitizing wipes. Yes, I carry both with me…at all times. I’m just one of those moms. 🙂

So here’s my easy-peasy disinfecting wipes recipe.

To-Go Recipe #1:

  1. Grab a new pack of baby wipes and open it up.
  2. Pour about 1/2 to 1 cup of rubbing alcohol in the bag.
  3. Close the wipes up and stuff it in your bag.
  4. Done and now you have disinfecting power in your pocket!

To-Go Recipe #2:

  1. Grab a paper towel roll with the half sheets and pull off a large strip or enough of the towels that you’ll want to use (we use a lot). You can either tear each towel apart or fold them accordion style, Then, add them to a Ziploc freezer bag.
  2. In a measuring cup, add 1 Tbsp. of baby shampoo or baby wash. You could also use mild or natural dish soap.
  3. Also, add 1/2 cup of Purified water or Reverse Osmosis water and 1/2 cup of rubbing alcohol in the measuring cup. Mix well then add the mixture to the Ziploc bag with the paper towels. If you have too much liquid, add more towels. If you don’t have enough liquid, make a smaller batch until all the towels are wet.
  4. Easy and affordable disinfecting to-go wipes! Take that Covid!

You could add essential oils to the rubbing alcohol in your DIY cleaning wipes before adding it to the bags if you want to. This can help the smell of the wipe and give it more antibacterial properties if you use either Thieves or Purification Essential Oil. (I use the Young Living brand because of their purity promise.)

As you can see, making disinfecting wipes can be affordable and you can create less waste too.

So let’s get busy making reusable disinfecting cleaning wipes so you can save more money this year!
