One way to save massive money on your fresh produce is to pick it yourself. Not only will you save, but its really fun to get your hands dirty and show your kids where their food comes from. Here’s some strawberry farms that have opened up their farms for a quick U-Pick season. If you know of another one near you, please comment below to let others know!

Every year my family enjoys fun time heading out to the Strawberry fields to pick berries! We usually meet up with friends and pick for about an hour in order to stock up with around 50 lbs of berries we use to make jam, smoothies and strawberry lemonade!

Berry Picking 2014

**NOTE: Berries are measured oddly. Some fields sell the berries in pounds and some in quarts. Use this as a guide: 1 Quart = 1.5 Pounds ; 1 Pound = 3/4 Quart. Also, one pound of strawberries is about 15-20 ping pong ball sized berries.

Strawberry U-Pick 2016

IMPORTANT TIPS FOR U-PICKING:

  • Bring LOW sided containers (you don’t want to stack the berries in a big bucket, it will ruin them). Bring pots, bowls (with lids) or rubbermaid containers. You don’t want to stack the berries too deep or they will get smashed.
  • Bring Hats and Sunscreen.
  • To pick the most, when you grab the berry, “snap” it off at the stem (kinda flick your wrist) and the berry will drop right into your hand. This is the fasted way to get the most berries!
  • Many farmers stop spraying once the fields are open for U-Pick so you have less of a chance for eating polluted berries right off the bush. However, I want you to know that before you are “sampling” while you pick (we always sample!!).
  • Try to hit the fields first thing in the morning. That is best for crowd control and safer from the heat exhaustion and sun burn.
