Remember that the whole purpose of a spending freeze is to eliminate the excess in your spending.

However, there are some expenses that you may need to address during your spending freeze.

If you or your spouse still commutes to work each day, cutting out gas spending might not work.

Start Small

If this is your first no-spend challenge and you are new to the concept of a no spending period, I suggest starting small.

As I mentioned earlier, no matter how long you go, you will still save your family money.

For those of you getting started, just start with a no-spend day.

You may be thinking that a no-spend day can’t be productive, but think of all the purchases you might be making in a single day.

Coffee on the way to work, lunch with your coworkers, a snack from the vending machine, dinner out, drinks with friends, and a new toy for your kids to play with could all be one day’s purchases.

Now think about what an impact a no-spend week could have on your finances and what a no-spend month could do too!

Learn To Use What You Have Available

The most challenging part of a spending freeze is learning to use what you have.

Being a little creative can take you far in this area, and is crucial for more extended spending freezes.

This may include things like getting creative with your meals to use up the food you have on hand, checking a movie out from the library instead of going to the movies.

It could mean inviting your girlfriends over for a potluck in place of going out for brunch and learning to make gourmet coffee at home to avoid going through the Starbucks drive-through.

All of these things are things I have done during a no-spend period to keep us from spending money.

Just think if you spend $5 during a no-spend day on coffee, and you continue that $5 savings every day, that’s $1,300 a year in coffee savings just by making it at home!

Reevaluate What You Want And What You Need

A no-spend day can help you think about what you want and what you need.

Overspending at the grocery store might not be something you are doing intentionally, but rather a side effect of mindless spending.

When you say no to purchasing anything during a no-spend period, this can change your mindset about where you are spending your money. It can also help you realize areas where you may have been wasting your money all this time.

No spending periods also teach you to work with what you have on hand. Since spending money is not an option, you have to get creative and learn to appreciate what you already have in your home.
