Are you wondering how to show someone you love them when extra money is not in your budget?
When was the last time you went out for a night on the town with your significant other?
But flowers, dinner, a movie and a babysitter will easily cost you over $100! For only one night of fun. Ugh!
And hopefully you are thinking… “but if we don’t go out on date nights what else are we supposed to do?”
Trust me, I get it. Life gets a little crazy, we put our love on the back burner while being parents and don’t always have time to make special time for each other.
You can still show your spouse just how much they mean to you without blowing your budget on a night out.
I spoke about this topic on my Savings Segment on Fox. Watch the replay video here:
Plus, some of the most generous and romantic gifts cost nothing in terms of spending money. The best gifts demonstrate that you appreciate and accept who your spouse is, that you know exactly what makes them happy, and that you care enough to give from the heart.
Need some ideas? Here are some specific ways how to show someone you love them on a budget.
Leave Your Spouse A Surprise Message
There is something special about taking the time to leave your love a message!
You can leave a little note inside the current book they’re reading.
Add a post-it note to the dashboard of their car or even just set an alarm on your phone to send them a quick text reminding them how much you love them midway through the day!
While you’re brushing your teeth in the morning, take a few minutes to scribble a sweet message for your spouse and leave it for them to find while they are getting ready.
Leaving your spouse a short message doesn’t have to a cost a thing, but still shows them you’re thinking about them.
Make Something Unique
Here’s another way how to show someone you love them.
Why DO you love your spouse? There is no time like the present to tell them with a couple of super easy handmade gifts.
When James and I were dating, we lived in separate states throughout college (he moved to MN and NC while I was in FL) and we had to think of creative ways to show we cared across all those miles. Letters got boring.
One year for Valentines Day he handmade me paper roses and mailed them to be delivered on Valentine’s Day. Inside the box were 24 paper roses made from green construction and red tissue paper. Then, the best part was the 24 notes he wrote to go along with them that told me 24 things he loved about me. What a romantic, right?!
Easier than making two dozen roses by hand, yet just as thoughtful, is to make these “open when” notes for the recipient to open “when they miss you” or “when they are having a bad day”. Another spin on that is to choose a significant time during the day and then address the front of the envelope with that specific time when they should open it. Also, Inside you could put photos from fun memories or thoughtful notes about why you love them.
After all, no matter how much you tell them, a unique and thoughtful expression of love is always going to mean even more.
Grow Indoor Air Together
Does she have a favorite flower beside roses? Maybe tulips or carnations? Not only will that flower always be less expensive than roses, but they will mean more than just the “typical” flower of love.
If they love roses, then choosing a color other than red or short-stemmed (instead of long-stemmed) will be your better budget busting alternative choice.
You know what I love? Growing indoor air! There are plenty of nice houseplants that make beautiful gifts. And unlike fresh flowers, which will wither and die in the near future, a plant will last indefinitely and be thought of more as an investment.
You could also start a small indoor herb garden. It’s not expensive to start an herb garden in your house. Plus, as they grow you’ll get to use the items together in the kitchen (further saving you money).
Write An Old-Fashioned Love Letter
Remember when you used to pass love notes back in school? Whatever happened to that?!
Writing your loved one a love letter can be a great way how to show someone you love them, without having to even say a word.
Leave it on their pillow before bed, tuck it away in their wallet, or hand it to them on your way out the door.
This is a low-cost way to make them feel special without spending a dime.
Give Them A Passionate Kiss or Touch
When was the last time you kissed your spouse?
I’m not talking about a quick peck as they walked out the door, but a long passionate kiss.
There is nothing like a warm embrace, especially when you really need one.
It doesn’t have to be movie dramatic… you could just reach over and hold their hand while you are walking together running errands. Or if you have the kids at the park, scootch a little closer on the bench and tell them they smell good.
Another idea on how to show someone you love them.
Spend Quality Time Together
When you have little kids running around the house, they seem to demand all of our attention! Which means getting some one on one time with your spouse might seem impossible.
After the kids are in bed, make some intention to spend quality time with your spouse.
Start a show series on Netflix or Amazon Prime video together, and watch it only when the kids are asleep. Stay up late talking and cuddling in bed, or find another activity to do together.
Go for a walk together. If your kid has a sports practice, drop them off at practice and then instead of visiting with the other parents, take your spouse and go for a walk. This can be a great chance to catch up with one another without the kids around.
No matter how busy your life gets, it’s so important how to show someone you love them.
Do Something Just Because
You don’t have to spend a ton of money to get your spouse something they’ll enjoy.
Stop by the dollar store on the way home and pick up a little treat for your sweetheart, or get them that book they’ve been dying to read from the library.
One thing I like to do is if I am out somewhere and I see something that makes me think of my husband, I’ll grab it. If I see his favorite candy bar, I will bring it home. When I give it to him, I let him know I was thinking of him when I purchased it.
This small gesture means the world to him because it shows I was thinking about him when he wasn’t around.
That’s how to show someone you love them.
Remove A Headache
Each of us has that one task that we simply detest. I think one of the best presents you can give is to make that headache disappear. Taking the car to be inspected or bringing in the car for an oil change.
Along that same line is performing a small act of service for your spouse that can transform their day. If it’s usually their job to unload the dishwasher, do it for them.
Maybe they have an important meeting coming up at work, lay out their clothes for them the night before to make the morning smooth. Or take a task they typically have to do, off their shoulders (at our house that would be a trash run… and since I hate doing that chore, it would show sacrifice!).

It can be a great way how to show someone you love them and how much they mean to you by giving them a few minutes of peace.
Schedule It On Your Calendar
If you are afraid, you won’t have time for date nights, right now, choose a date and schedule it on your calendar!
If you are on a tight budget, you can still enjoy a date night from home! Pop some popcorn and have a movie night indoors, or go out for a romantic stroll and a picnic in your backyard!
There are so many creative ways how to show someone you love them without having to empty your wallet.
