If you’ve ever browsed the Google Play Store or iTunes Store, you know that there are a lot of free smart travel apps out there.

I’m always looking for ways to save money and find quick and easy ways to do things, and apps have always helped with that.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve put a few of these apps to the test to find the best free travel apps that will make your life easier!

And since you love free too, I thought I would share them.

Because sharing is caring!

And since I won’t ever share my coffee, FREEBIES are the next best thing!

These apps should be available on both iTunes and Google Play, and all of them are FREE!

Google Maps

This one might sound stupid, but trust me Google Maps is worth mentioning! If you have an iPhone, then you have to download Google Maps. But it comes with the stock setup on Android phones. Google Maps not only gives directions, but it can also show you different routes to take, real-time traffic. And it can even help you make stops along the way.

For more extended road trips, I love using the offline option. Google Maps allows you to download your trip offline so you won’t waste your phone data and if you have a weak connection, you won’t lose navigation.

I have used a lot of apps to find flights, but nothing beats the Skyscanner app. You can even refine your search to “cheapest month,” how cool is that! This is great for anyone who is looking to travel with flexible destinations or dates

Skyscanner will also alert you to fluctuations in price, so you can make sure you get the best deal possible. Skyscanner is excellent for international flights, but you can use it for domestic ones as well.

Field Trip

Field Trip is one of my favorite apps to use for planning your trip. Using location data from your phone, Field Trip will notify you when you come across hidden or unique hotspots in your area. This can be a great way to explore a new city or even your own hometown!

This app includes restaurants, clubs, museums, landmarks, and more to show you the best your city of choice has to offer. Field Trip can even alert you to concerts and entertainment in the area.

I used this app to explore our hometown and found a really fun little milkshake stand that was only 10 minutes from our house! We had so much fun when we took the kids over to it.

This app works a lot like Google Maps, but with a fun twist. In addition to showing you walking and cycling options, they also show you how many calories you’ll burn on your journey!

You can also find public transportation and estimated drive time and costs for Uber. While in the app, you can even book your Uber ride!

Citymapper is mostly for larger cities, so be sure to check that your city is included before you download the app.

If you struggle with packing your bags, this one is going to be a lifesaver. There are a ton of lists out there to help you pack for your trip. But let’s be real, you’ll still forget something even with the list! When you are waiting in line at the airport is usually the time you realize you forgot something.

The great thing about PackPoint is that based on your destination, length of travel, weather, and planned activities, it can create a custom packing list for you! This is great for places you’ve never been, or activities you’ve never done before.

I have used this app many times and I love it. It’s so helpful making sure everyone has all that they need. Do you know how many times we have had to go buy our kid’s socks or a bathing suit because they forgot them? That’s why this is one of my favorite smart traveler apps!

If you struggle with finding things to do or great local restaurants to dine at, this app is for you! You can also find the top-rated hotels, vacation spots and more!

My hubby plans out our excursions using this app to find places we haven’t visited before and new restaurants to try. He is always wanting to try out the #1 rated restaurant in the area to see what the “buzz” is about.

Google Translate

If you are traveling internationally or having difficulty speaking with someone from a foreign country, Google Translate will be a lifesaver! All you have to do is type in what you want to say, choose the language you would like to communicate in, and it will say it for you!

In case this wasn’t helpful enough, they even have a camera feature that allows you to hold up the camera to a sign and it will translate them for you! How cool is that?!!

Wrapping It Up

Planning a trip can be stressful enough, but when it comes to traveling, it can be a little more challenging. Most of us aren’t going solo, so there are other people’s bags to pack, activities to plan, and so much more. These free travel apps will not only help make your travel experience more enjoyable, but they will also help save you money! Make sure to download these smart traveler apps before your next trip, so you’re prepared for anything that comes your way.
