Fox 13 LogoDid you catch our Savings Segment this morning on Fox?  We are honored to be a featured on Good Day Tampa Bay each Sunday to share our knowledge about coupons and how to get the most for your money!  This week’s topic was all about homemade vs store bought – which is cheaper?

Watch the video right here:

Here is a little more information for you:
  1. Canning your own produce – jams, jellies and spaghetti sauces. All are homemade and easy to make and have inexpensive ingredients, but which is actually cheaper? You can get a great deal on the ingredients used for making jams and tomato sauce, you can even get a coupon on the CANNING products themselves. But the cheapest choice? Buying store bought. You are going to spend close to $2 to home make these products, but it will cost less than $1 to buy these items in the store using coupons. Winner is Store Bought using coupons.
  2. Bread and Pizza – Pizza is fun because really there are three choices here…delivery, homemade and frozen store bought. The average couponed price for a pizza is around $2.50. To make pizza from scratch is very very easy! And super cheap too! (check our the Kiefer personal family Pizza Dough recipe HERE) It will only cost around $1 for an extra large size! And delivery…forget about it. That just needs to be a splurge because it is outrageous in the scheme of these prices! Winner is Homemade.
  3. Desserts (Brownies, Cakes & Cookies) – I used to think it was too hard to make brownies from scratch, so I always bought them in a box and just mixed and baked. But one time I had no box to make and had to have something the next day…so I went to the pantry and found that it was actually very simple. And took about the same amount of time to make from scratch. But what does it actually cost? Both homemade and store bought cost around $0.50 to make. The same holds true for the other dessert items as well. Cakes and Cookies are no different – they cost about the same to make at home as it costs to buy them when you use a coupon. It’s a tie…

Any Clear Winner? Basically, using coupons keeps your cost low so that you can have the convenience of a quick ready made product at your fingertips. But if you have the time and energy to create your own fabulous concoction, sometimes you will not only win in the price but also in the fun! Most of the time, the couponed item is going to win the price war, but when you factor in the quality time you can have in the kitchen with your kids, well, you know the saying…priceless!
