Many Easter traditions focus on the Easter bunny because it is fun (and who doesn’t love bunnies?).

But there are many Easter activities for families that can easily help you slow down and keep the focus on the importance of the season.

Plus, with our busy lives, it’s important to learn how to keep Christ in Easter and create great family traditions and memories.

So I’ll share with you the best Christian Easter activities I’ve found so your family can keep that Christ-centered focus this season.

However, I’m going to show you how you can keep Christ in Easter this year.

Decorating For Easter

Easter is a time to celebrate new life and for how to keep Christ in Easter, which is why it ties in so well with spring.

When choosing decorations for Easter this year, look for spring flowers and ways to showcase this moment.

I like to incorporate colored eggs in my floral centerpiece to keep spring as the focus, but with a fun twist.

Add plaques or crosses to your Easter wreaths that say “He Has Risen”.

Black represents mercy, penance and mourning.

Green represents new beginnings as in the promise of eternal life.

Gold stands for the glory and triumph of Jesus’ over death and his miraculous resurrection.

Pink colors represent the morning sky for the hope of a new day.

Purple represents Lent, fasting, penitence, royalty, and remembrance.

Red represents the blood that Christ shed for us. It also represents His love, suffering, and His ultimate sacrifice.

White colors represent the purity and the resurrection of Christ.

Teach Your Kids About The Meaning Behind The Easter Egg

Were you aware that the tradition of hunting for Easter eggs is not because of the Easter bunny?

These traditions and even the use of eggs and rabbits date back to the Middle Ages and have Christian origins.

There’s nothing wrong with hunting for Easter eggs in your Easter activities, but don’t forget to teach your children the history behind the Easter Egg.

I really like thinking about the symbolism of a bird emerging from its shell. It’s like Jesus emerging from his tomb.

Create A Resurrection Garden

In addition to coloring eggs and hunting for candy, consider adding a more religious craft to your activities list.

Creating a Resurrection Garden can be a fun way to teach your kids about the reason we celebrate Easter in a fun and hands-on way.

Lent

Lent is a longstanding tradition for many in the weeks from Ash Wednesday to Easter.

During Lent, we give something up and work on our will-power.

However, Lent can also be a chance to discuss with your children about the sacrifices Christ has made for us and how we can do the same during Lent, on a smaller scale.

I see many friends on Facebook who give up chocolate, or meat, or social media itself.

The neat part is that when we stop doing something or give up something for a certain period of time, it reminds us of the true sacrifice Christ made when he died for us on the cross.

There are many Easter activities for kids to help kids with the understanding of Lent and of our Christian Easter activities.

Discuss The Story Of Easter

In preparation for your Easter activities, read or listen to the Easter Story from the bible.

You can take this a step further by attending a sunrise service at a church near you. And then creating Easter foods for lunch to go with the lesson.

Associating food with a valuable lesson always helps me remember them better.

Skip The Sweets

Not only is Easter candy expensive, but sometimes sweets can get in the way of the real meaning of Easter and our Easter activities.

Your kids can still enjoy the classic Easter egg hunt with plastic eggs, but with something else inside.

You can put bible verses in the Easter eggs from the Story of Easter or stickers your kids might enjoy.

Eat Breakfast At Sunrise On Easter

A fun tradition you can start with your family is waking up at the crack of dawn (literally) and watching the sunrise as you eat breakfast!

It’s one of our favorite Easter activities!

This could be done on a different day instead of Easter Sunday if your church already holds an Easter Service (some churches we’ve attended over the years don’t have sunrise service, it’s just at the normal time).

You can imagine how relieving it would be to see the sunrise, after 3 HOURS of complete darkness right during the middle of the day!

Also, this can be a great reminder that just like the sun rises and sets at night, Christ rose again from the tomb.

Host A Passover Meal

One of the best ways to get into the actual Easter spirit is to host a Passover meal for one of your Easter activities.

You can enjoy foods that resemble symbols of Passover and find creative ways to teach your family about why this meal is so important.

Look For Ways To Serve Others

Jesus served his people in many ways, and Easter is one of the best times to remind your family about the importance of serving others.
