After Christmas Sales – Save The Most Money On These 8 Items

Going shopping during the after Christmas sales is a big deal at our house. There are items that you just can’t get cheaper any other time of the year.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, I still shop on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but there are certain things that are better to buy when you wait and purchase them during the after Christmas sales.

In fact, a friend and I were chatting on the phone and she said that she was tempted to tell her little kids that Christmas day was actually a week AFTER 12/25 so that she could take advantage of the crazy good after Christmas sales (and money she might receive) in hopes that she’d get more for her money.

And where they are some things to wait until after Christmas to buy, but it does not work for the majority of gifts you would be purchasing.

Instead, I’ve found that there are certainly a few items that ARE less expensive after Christmas.

Some of the best deals that you’ll find all year happen right after Christmas because stores mark items down 30 to 70 percent off! I’ll happily go in and scoop them up to save more money.

Not only do I save money buying things for gifts, but it’s so much fun creating my gift closet for the upcoming year.

And these deals will help my budget next year too since I won’t have buy stuff for full price.

Plus, it’s great family time getting my kids in on the hunt for good deals. They appreciate that I need their help and they love spending quaility time with me shopping and hunting for deals.

Here are 8 after Christmas deals you should wait to buy during the after Christmas sales, and my favorite things to buy after Christmas!

1. A New Car (Or Used)

Did you know that the very best time to buy a car (it doesn’t matter if your buying new or used) is during the week between Christmas and New Years? Yep! Sure is!

I spoke in depth with a retired car dealership owner and he said that was when they gave out the very best after Christmas deals.

You see, they are trying to make quotas and get rid of inventory before they head into the next year. That’s why these after Christmas sales are so important.

I was always cautious of our sales team trying to squeeze in one last sale before the “month-end close”. It only makes sense for that to be true in the case of a large car sale as well.

2. Birthday Wrapping Paper To Last All Year, Gifts & More

Most people know that holiday decorations are the cheapest immediately after Christmas in order to buy it for next year.

But you’ve got more smarts than that… because you can either start shopping for your own decorations for next Christmas, or you can also think about gifts your gonna give next year. Why wait until next November to start shopping for Christmas?

I usually also purchase plain red, green, blue, silver or gold wrapping paper to use throughout the year to wrap birthday presents. So long as it doesn’t look Christmasy then I simply add some ribbon and it looks professional, while I’ve saved a load of money on something that just gets thrown away.

You can also find red, green, blue, silver and gold gift bags for cheap also, in case you are a gift bag kinda wrapper 🙂 It’s one of my favorite things to buy after Christmas!

Want a giant inflatable for your yard? Both Home Depot and Walmart slash the prices (at least 50% off) of those fun yard ornaments on 12/26!

On December 26th you’ll start to see major discounts up to 75% off seasonal items.

Did you give anyone a cinnamon or pine scented candle this year? Why not stock up on some when they are 70% less expensive and be ready to give it next year! Neighbors, teachers, and church leaders would all love to receive that gift from you next year.

Retailers have stocked up on items such as Christmas Ornaments, Stocking, Holiday Cards, Wrapping Paper, and more during the holiday season, once Christmas is over they have to get rid of them. That means during the after Christmas sales you’ll get the good deals on any of these items you want to use next year. 

My favorite thing to purchase is a few extra strands of Christmas lights (indoor and outdoor) to have on hand for next year. And tinsel for the tree… that’s always 90% off (typically 10¢ a box vs $1!).

NOTE: If you have your eye on an artificial tree, hurry to get to stores first thing on 12/26 so that you get one! Those after Christmas deals typically sell out quickly.

3. Plastic Storage Bins & Boxes

Are you planning on organizing your house after the 1st of the New Year? Then you’re probably gonna want to look for all the fantastic after Christmas deals on storage boxes!

I always stock up to use boxes for reorganizing things in our garage or the Christmas decorations, or my stockpile.

The secret is not to go to the organizing section… but to go to the clearance Christmas decorations. Any storage boxes that are red or green colors are considered Christmas items which means you can get them for a lot less than the typical organizing boxes.

Take advantage of the fact that the boxes are colored for Christmas and get them significantly cheaper!

4. Gift Sets

Stores stock up on gift sets during the holiday season, but just because Christmas is over doesn’t mean these gift sets become useless.

You can score bonus freebies that come wrapped in sets for lotions, shower essentials, perfume and even pet gift sets for just a few dollars.

Stock up on these good deals especially the non-Christmas packaged ones for many events throughout the year; birthdays, graduations, even baby showers. Put these goodies away to use as gifts all throughout the entire year.

These are great things to buy after Christmas!

Burt’s Bees gift sets look the same every year, so I’ve been able to score them super cheap after Christmas and put them away to give to someone the following Christmas (look for expiration dates, some will show that they are 3 years out!).

5. Winter Clothing

Right after Christmas is the best time to start getting good deals on winter merchandise. It’s one of those things to wait until after Christmas to buy!

That’s because retailers are anxious to start putting out their spring clothes which means you can get boots, sweaters, jackets, and other winter merchandise at rock bottom prices.

If you can, save your winter clothing shopping trip until after the holidays. Don’t forget to stock up for NEXT year. For kids, buy the next size up and maybe even consider purchasing a nice new coat to give someone you love as a Christmas Present next year.

I have a “puffy” jacket that I just love, that has held it style for years. Every year I check to see if it is still in style and what the price is (it’s always the same price, just under $30, when it’s regularly $129). This would be an easy purchase during the after Christmas sales and given as a present the following year.

6. Video Games

One of the best things to wait until after Christmas to buy is reduced priced video games at used goods stores and retail stores such as Gamestop.

After Christmas when parents realize they bought the wrong game and the store won’t take it back, they often end up here and that means good deals for us!

These games can be discounted up to 75% off their “special holiday deals” and some may still be in the original packaging. Their unfortunate mishap is your opportunity to get a new game at a great price!

7. Throw Blankets

I love giving (and receiving) blankets. They are warm and snuggly and make me remember the sweet person who gave them to me.

But they are cheapest if you WAIT to buy them in the after Christmas sales. That’s because those happy bundles of fluff take up a lot of shelf space.

Make sure you check department stores such as Target,  Macy’s and Kohl’s where you’ll likely be able to find a coupon you can stack on an already low sale price and get some great after Christmas deals.

8. Bakeware

Everyone is baking in December so there is no reason for stores to discount holiday-themed baking products such as red pans, cookie presses or mini Bundt cake pans.

Then, everyone goes on a diet in January, so no one needs the bakeware!

Take advantage of this knowledge and watch for deep discounts during the after Christmas sales on all bakeware, but especially the holiday-themed bakeware.

Remember, this would also make a great gift for a friend, neighbor or someone geting married next year!
